Sightseeing in London Excel

The ExCel portion of London is located at the Royal Victoria Dock between Canary Wharf and London City Airport. Whether you’re passing through to see another city in England, or staying at Moxy London Excel, you must see a few of the sights around London ExCel region.

London’s Royal Dock

London’s Royal Dock is an area located in the eastern part of London. It comprises three different docks, King George V Dock, Royal Albert Dock, and the Royal Victoria Dock. These docks are the largest enclosed docks in the world. They comprise an area that covers the width of central London.

The Docks are no longer used for commercial shipping. Today, many pleasure craft use this region. There are plenty of water sports, and the London Boat Show is held here. The ExCel Exhibition Centre is also in this region where many conferences, expositions, and conventions are held each year.

Emirates Air Line

The Emirates Air Line is not to be mistaken for the airport service. This is a cable car link that runs across the River Thames. It can provide transport across London or simply be a recreational experience. It first opened in 2012, and has since provided transportation to over a million people.

The Emirates Air Line also provides a wonderful view of London. The transit time varies from between five minutes at rush hour, to ten minutes during less busy times. Passengers may pay for their journey with their Oyster cards.

Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge is perhaps one of the most iconic landmarks in all of London. It can be seen for kilometres away on the Thames River. This bridge comprises a bascule and a suspension bridge design that was built from 1886 to 1894. Beside it is the Tower of London, an old fortress that is now a tourist attraction. The Tower Bridge is now protected as a Grade I listed structure but still allows traffic to cross it.

The Tower Bridge holds daily tours so you can actually see inside the structure. You’ll also get to the see the Victorian engine rooms that operate the bridge. The bridge itself has two twin towers, and a transportation deck that can actually be raised in the air to let through taller ships.

The bridge underwent extensive maintenance in 2016, so is sure to provide many more years of life to the transportation network of London. Each year, the bascule is raised about 1000 times for river traffic. It’s backed up by several different motors in case one fails. You may just have an opportunity to see it in action during your visit here.
